Guest NeilM
Bear with me as this is a genealogy question as much as a history question and just trying to figure something out. When looking at census records for ancestors I'm trying to figure out what an Ecclesiastical parish is and hence where was the Ecclesiastical parish of 'Golcar within Ecclesall Bierlow? I'm guessing this might give me a clue as to where (which church) particular ancestors were baptised / married / buried and thus offer new leads? Thoughts? TIA N

Guest NeilM
Where born: Sheffield Civil parish: Ecclesall Bierlow Ecclesiastical parish: Golcar County/Island: Yorkshire Country: England That is what the records look like for those living in that particular bit of Ecclesall Bierlow (The bit that is now the bottom end of the more area and bramall lane).... Other parts of Ecclesall Bierlow have differnet Ecclesiastical parishes (what ever these represent - part of my query). For example St Matthew is another one representing a different part of E.B. Guest NeilM
Hi Neil - what years are we talking about here? Hi, these are census records, 1891 I was looking at. Just looked at the top of the original transcript and the field in the top right corner clearly reads Gilcar of which there is a little more info floating about so an Ancestry error!!! Still, having figured that St Silias in Broomhill recided in this parish I'm not sure how I'd find out if any others do, or what parishes link to other churches, for e.g that St Marys at Bramall lane was probably closer to where they lived but it wasn't Bramall lane back then so the parish would have had another name. All in all I'm just trying to figure out what church records would be most likely to contain data on Birth, Marrages and Deaths based on who was living where when...
